March Focus: Supporting the Healthy Expression of Male Energy

As we move into March, a month often associated with forward momentum and renewal, we turn our focus to a powerful and often misunderstood topic — male energy- and how we can guide our young men to harness it in healthy, grounded, and purposeful ways.
What Is Male Energy?
Male energy (sometimes called masculine energy) isn’t about dominance, suppression of emotions, or outdated stereotypes. At its healthiest, male energy represents:
Drive and initiative
Courage and healthy risk-taking
Protection and responsibility
Focus and direction
Leadership and accountability
When nurtured correctly, this energy becomes a force for creativity, resilience, and positive contribution to family and community.
The Challenge Facing Young Men Today
Many young men receive mixed messages:
“Be strong” but don’t admit emotions
“Be confident” but don’t take up space
“Be independent” but don’t ask for help
Without healthy guidance, male energy can become misdirected — showing up as aggression, withdrawal, low motivation, or emotional shutdown.
Our role as parents, mentors, educators, and wellbeing advocates is not to suppress this energy, and the emotions driving it — but to shape and channel it.
How We Can Help Young Men Harness Their Energy
Teach Emotional Strength (Not Emotional Suppression)
True strength includes emotional awareness.
Encourage:
Naming emotions ( most important)
Just telling the self:
“I am angry, I feel the anger in my stomach, head”. Wherever….
Tell the self first, let yourself know what you feel
Be ‘ sensitive’ to your feelings
Strength and sensitivity are not opposites — they are partners.
Male energy is often highly physical. Support outlets such as:
Strength training
Outdoor challenges
Creative hands-on projects
Physical engagement builds discipline, confidence, and emotional stability.
Encourage Purpose & Responsibility
Young men thrive when given meaningful responsibility.
Invite them to:
Contribute to family decisions
Take ownership of tasks
Set personal goals
Purpose transforms raw energy into leadership.
Provide Positive Male Role Models
Whether it’s a father, uncle, coach, teacher, or mentor — young men need examples of balanced masculinity:
Strong yet kind
Confident yet respectful
Driven yet sensitive to others responses
Ones who habitually name emotions in their conversations
Reflection for This Month
How do we speak about masculinity in our homes?
Are we correcting behaviour — or guiding energy?
Are our young men being heard, or only disciplined?
This March, let’s commit to raising grounded, emotionally aware, purpose-driven young men.
When male energy is understood, it becomes a force for good.
